...Thugs Attacked Osun Crossover Party, Gov, Wife and Others Ferried for Safety...

Three people have been arrested by the police in connection with the disruption of the New Year Crossover programme organised by the Osun State Government on Tuesday night to herald the New Year’s Day in Osogbo.

The arrest brought the number of suspects arrested in connection with the incident to four.

Operatives of the Department of State Services, Osun Command, it was learnt, on Wednesday, arrested one person at the scene of the incident.

They were said to have ferried Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and other guests out of the venue, when some people believed to be thugs hurled stones in their direction at the event.

The suspects arrested by the police, according to sources, are being detained at the Osun Police Command Headquarters, Osogbo.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Osun Command, Folasade Odoro, in a chat with our correspondent, confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

She, however, insisted that police operatives apprehended the suspects for attempt to disrupt the event.

She said, “The event was holding at the Freedom Park, Osogbo with the state governor and other dignitaries in attendance.

“Attempt to disrupt the event at about 1am when the governor was about leaving the venue was rebuffed by police operatives. Three suspects were arrested and they are helping our investigations.”

Observers, however, expressed the belief that the disruption may be politically motivated.

This, they noted, could be the handwork of the supporters of the immediate governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola, who they believed had been in a cold war with Oyetola.

However, the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Famoodun, in a statement said the governor and other dignitaries at the crossover event were not attacked.

A statement by Kola Olabisi, his media aide, stated, “A minor disagreement between two urchins at such an annual gathering could not be equated to attack on the governor and some members of his cabinet.

“There cannot be any basis to attack Governor Oyetola who is reputed for giving the people of the state qualitative governance. It is on record that Oyetola’s government has been paying full salaries to the state civil servants since its inception as and when due.

“Some of the inherited on-going capital projects like road construction/rehabilitation are also being attended to with adequate attention being giving to primary healthcare delivery programme in all the wards across the state.”
