Gunmen attacked Ekiti East Local Government Area on Sunday and kidnapped a couple planning to marry next week, police said on Monday.
ASP Sunday Abutu, the state police spokesman, told the News Agency of Nigeria that three people had been arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
“We learned that the couple visited Ado Ekiti and were on their way back to their base when they were apprehended by gunmen.
“As soon as we received the report, the Police Commissioner, Babatunde Mobayo, dispatched our men and officers to the surrounding forests.”
“As I speak, our men are combing the forests with the “Amotekun” Corps, local hunters, and Vigilance groups to free the victims,” he said.
According to ASP Abutu, those arrested have been detained at the Ado-Ekiti police headquarters and will be arraigned as soon as investigations are completed.
He stated that efforts were being made to apprehend other conspirators.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were apprehended on the Ilasa-Ekiti-Ayebode Road in Ekiti East Local Government Area.
The victims were on their way back from Ado Ekiti, where they had gone to make wedding preparation purchases, when they were kidnapped.
According to family members of the victims, the abductors contacted them and demanded a N5 million ransom to secure their release.
According to one eyewitness, the vehicle transporting the would-be couple was attacked on a dangerous stretch of highway.
“The deplorable state of our roads appears to be a major factor responsible for these repeated cases of kidnapping,” said an eyewitness.
