Following the murder of a cultist by a rival group in Osogbo, the Osun Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with the State Joint Task Force, apprehended 11 suspected cultists in a gun battle.

Some cultists were said to have invaded the Owo-Ope community around Ayetoro on motorcycles around 11 a.m. and killed a teenage member of a rival group.

The gun and cutlass wielding cultists moved in groups from Abaku to Owode, alerting residents, who then informed Amotekun Corps.

The corps, in collaboration with the JTF, raided suspected cultist hideouts in the state capital, including the Ayetoro, Sabo, and Egbatedon areas.

Rasaki Afeez, an eyewitness, told newsmen that the cultist engaged the security operatives in a gun duel at Owo-Ope before Amotekun could gain access to their hideout.

“We heard gunshots, but later, three people were hauled into security operatives’ vehicles, and another was shot,” he said.

Yemisi Opalola, an Osun Police spokesperson, confirmed that a suspected rival cultist was killed at Ayetoro and that security operatives have since brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Brigadier-General Bashir Adewinmbi, Commandant of the Osun Amotekun Corps, confirmed that 11 suspected cultists were apprehended during the joint operations, with one being shot in the leg.

“Yes, we raided some black spots in the state capital with the State Joint Task Force after some rival cultist groups engaged in a shootout that resulted in the death of a suspected cultist who has yet to be identified.

“During the raid, some of them opened fire on our operatives, and a cultist was shot in the leg as a result. He is currently being treated at the Police Clinic because we still need to question him for information.

“Ten other suspects were arrested and are currently being interrogated by police,” he said.
