On Tuesday, police in Ogun said they killed one kidnap suspect and arrested another in a shootout at Ilala Forest in Abeokuta’s Imala Area.

“One member of a kidnap syndicate was arrested while another was gunned down at Ilala Forest in Imala area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area,” police spokesman DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a statement.

“This comes barely 24 hours after two members of another kidnapping syndicate were gunned down in the state’s Itori area of Ewekoro Local Government Area.

“The gun battle between the police and the kidnappers was sparked by information received by the police at Imala Divisional Headquarters that six armed kidnappers had been spotted in the forest.”

“In response to the information, CSP Bernard Ediagbonya, Divisional Police Officer, Imala Division, mobilized men, hunters, vigilance men, and Fulani youths and stormed the forest.

“When the team arrived on the scene, the hoodlums who had seen them from a distance opened fire, and the team responded appropriately.

“During the process, one of the hoodlums was gunned down, and another, identified as Usman Maidama, was arrested. Other gang members escaped into the bush with gunshot wounds,” he added.

Oyeyemi also stated that a single barrel gun, a face mask, and two pairs of sandals were recovered from the syndicate members.

“The command’s offensive against bandits has yielded positive results. In the last three weeks, four AK 47 rifles were recovered from hoodlums,” Oyeyemi said.

He also stated that the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had directed that escaping members of the gang be tracked down and brought to justice.
