Three hoodlums were killed during an ambush on the Osogbo/Ilesha road for a vehicle transporting murder suspects to the Nigeria Correctional Service facility in Ilesha, Osun State.
The gunmen were shot dead as a result of the combined efforts of police and hunters.
SP Yemisi Opalola of the Osun Police Department confirmed the incident, noting that she had not been briefed on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to news reports on Thursday morning, gunmen ambushed a vehicle in Osunjale, Atakunmonsa West Local Government Area.
The police, with the help of local hunters, were able to repel the attack.
According to Opalola’s statement, around 3:30 p.m., the Osun Police tactical team’s vehicle developed a mechanical fault while transporting some murder suspects to Ilesa Correctional Centre after crossing the Osunjela River along Osogbo/Ilesa Road.
“While nearby mechanics were working on the vehicle, four armed men emerged from Osunjela road on a motorcycle and attacked the Police team by firing sporadically in an attempt to hijack suspects,” she explained.
“However, due to the superior firepower of the Police team, the hoodlums abandoned their motorcycle and three locally made guns: one pump action, two cut to size barrel guns, and fourteen live cartridges.
“Three murder suspects sustained various degrees of injuries during the process and later died at Asubiaro hospital in Osogbo and were deposited in the same hospital morgue. With bullet wounds, the hoodlums fled into the bush.
“In the meantime, the police, in collaboration with local security outfits and community youths, are combing the bush for possible arrests of the fleeing suspects.”
